DAY ONE of the new Sewcialites 2 Quilt Along! My Moda Blockheads quilt is pieced and patiently waiting for longarming so what better time to start in with a new sampler sew-along. I was very happy to be a part of last year's first Sewcialites quilt and was thrilled when Fat Quarter Shop asked me back for this one. Each Friday the Fat Quarter Shop will be releasing a new FREE block from one of the 24 designers. You can check the Fat Quarter Shop blog and join the Sewcialites Facebook group to join in the fun! At the shop, there are coordinating items to keep you organized and info about the sew-along too...visit HERE. A couple weeks will be off for holidays and a couple weeks at the end for assembly. Kimberly shows more detail on how she joins the blocks through her youtube channel each Friday. If you followed me on Moda Blockheads, you might know that I like to play around on my computer and do some color studies of the blocks. I (almost) always leave the pieces as they are in the diagram but change up the colors and light and dark placements to see what variations I might get. I can't promise every week, but I'll try! Our block #1 comes from Bev McCullough of Flamingo Toes and is called "Perennial." I was really intrigued by the little extra line from the rail block and how it makes that center pinwheel smaller. OR it could give an opportunity to have an accent stripe within the flower center. I think it is fun to treat the outside corner blocks either as leaves or as another layer of flower, suggesting the ways that petals overlap and are layered underneath other petals. Thank you Bev for giving us such a lovely, interesting block to start this Quilt-Along! I've been getting ready for Quilt Market so I've been busy making quilts with my newest line that is showing to shops now...Wild Blossoms. This fabric will ship in March 2023 but since I have some sample fabric, I'm planning on making my blocks with it and mix it with my basic line from Moda, Thatched. Here is my Perennial block made with the Little Wild Things print in red and green and Crimson, Maize and Sugar Rose Thatched. I'm making the 3" blocks for this project, which is the same size I sewed last time. That is when I learned that I really like to make these littler blocks. They are so cute! Wouldn't it be lovely to do a whole Christmas quilt with this block? It feels like a festive holiday flower and those pointed ends of petals are reminiscent of Poinsettias. Tune in next Friday for the next Socialites block.
Happy sewing!

My week with my second SEWCIALITES block is here! Celebrate "ABUNDANT"! I've got some variations and a fun project you can make with more blocks! I've made blocks this week from all three of the sizes- the 9", 6" and 3". In honor of SPRING arriving and Easter around the corner, I've made a project for a cheery table runner from three of the 9" flower blocks. I used the Solana fabric line for the blocks and border since it felt so happy and summery and I just could not resist some of those busy ladybugs. One variation that I made on my runner blocks, was to make the flower base out of two strips of fabric as horizontal bands vs one body color. This allows you to add more dimension or prints into the flowers or you could make the bottom green and the top band the petal colors. If you would like to do this, take the finished size of the flower base, divide in half, then add your 1/2" for two 1/4" seam allowances on sides. On the 9" block you would use (2) 9 1/2 x 2" strips, the 6" uses (2) 6 1/2 x 1 1/2" strips, and the 3" uses 3 1/2 x 1" strips. Each of my flowers for the runner use two strips for the base. I picked colors of peach, blue and yellow for the prints from Solana for my blocks. I also wanted to give my petals (made with the flying geese) two fabrics to suggest a little more dimension. To keep it looking like a cohesive unit, I chose stems and leaves in similar fabrics for all three flowers. If you are making the flower base with two pieces as shown below, I suggest joining them first, then add your stitch and flip corner to the joined unit. I find my seams will press flatter this way (vs corner first then joining the two strips). My runner also adds little pollen dots on top of each flower. The pollen pieces are made from 1" squares joined by background strips and that row is placed on top of the flying geese. To balance the flowers and make the bases and leaves line up when flipping, I've also added a 1" strip to the bottom of the flowers. Each of the flower blocks are joined, side by side, with 10 1/2 x 1 1/2" strips to make the body of the table runner. A 2" border surrounds the group. Here is my pieced top. It still needs quilting and binding but I can get that done by Easter. It adds a pop of spring to the table. I'm planning on binding in the light green Thatched from Solana. These could be so cute as white or light colored flowers on a dark blue, dark green or purple background. Or play around with string quilting pieces in the leaves? I also think a longer runner with more flowers that drapes over the edge of a chest or table could be nice! But I'll just enjoy this Solana version this spring and maybe make another one later! One more variation idea for this Abundant quilt block. I wanted to try patchwork squares within my flower to get a mix of warm pink, orange and red shades. Using the same formula for figuring out the horizontal bands for the flower body works for size of squares. This shows if you keep one a solid band on the underside of the bloom vs all patchwork squares. This 6" sample is done with some of my new Thatched colors! The background is Chocolate Bar and the leaves are Green Curry and Olive. The flower uses Peach, Pink Grapefruit, Sugar Rose, Fuchsia, Apricot, Tangerine, Rose and Crimson. The Fat Quarter Shop is carrying the Thatched colors, including the new additional range, as well as Solana fabrics. If you want to make patchwork squares, use 2", 1 1/2", or 1" squares for the 9, 6 or 3" blocks. My overall Sewcialites quilt is made with 3" blocks in Thatched in grays with three of the blocks in color. For this quilt with the small blocks, Abundant is one of the color ones! The other is the heart block from Corey Yoder and the third one will be the sewing machine from Lori Holt. Want the FREE pattern for the ABUNDANT block? It is on the Fat Quarter Shop page about SEWCIALITES! I hope you have as much fun with this block as I am having. Keep it simple or add to the blooming delight! And thank you to the Fat Quarter Shop for organizing this sewalong and thank you for including me. Happy sewing everyone!
Hi Everyone!! I'm so excited that this is my block week for Sewcialites! This is the first sewalong I've done with the Fat Quarter Shop and I am so impressed by how creative AND organized they are! My block is DEVOTED and isn't that a good thing to reflect on? What do you feel devoted to? I am devoted to my family. My husband is a loyal and constant support and I couldn't ask for a better partner. And my kids are awesome! I often wonder what I did right to get them in my life. My family is a priority that I am devoted to and feel grateful for them every day. I decided last week to make this block in my new SOLANA fabric since it is shipping to shops now! I'm so happy to see these sunflowers popping up on social media with those happy big blooms. The fabric has a tonal white on white of sunflower seeds and that is what I used for my background. I'm happy a little ladybug made it into one of my big half square triangles! I think this block would also look really nice set on point. The smaller HST give a balanced feel to the right and left sides. I also decided to try the 6" block in the reverse with color and print to the inside. This block reminds me of puzzle pieces with arms to interlock into the right fit. You can get your pattern from Fat Quarter Shop for DEVOTED by following this link: My original plan for Sewcialites was to make the 3" blocks for a wall quilt. I am doing some of the larger ones for fun in other prints and might do a smaller project like a table runner. For my small wall quilt that will include all the blocks, I'm using a subtle gray Heather, Pebble and Cream color palette with Thatched fabrics. I plan on making three of the blocks in little pops of color and I couldn't resist emphasizing sewing, love and flowers. I'm debating using some low volume fabrics in the setting blocks to add a little print and additional texture. If you want to check out more Thatched, check out this blog post. Plus I keep a color chart on the side panel of this blog and if you click it you will go to the larger image of the color chart. One thing I like to do with Thatched is also use it on the backside. It has a softer chambray look and gives me lighter shades. I hope you will also check out Solana. Fat Quarter Shop carries both Solana and Thatched.
Happy sewing and have a wonderful sewing week! - Robin I am really excited to be a part of the Sewcialites Quilt Along being given by the Fat Quarter Shop! The sew along officially starts on Friday, September 25th, 2020 and goes until Friday June 25th, 2021. A new block from a group of 18 designers will be released by the Fat Quarter Shop each Friday! This is a peek at my first block, Devoted, done up in my Thatched basics in gray Heather. There are three sizes of blocks for Sewcialites- 3", 6" or 9" sizes. You can pick whatever size you like. I have never made a sampler quilt with only 3" blocks and I thought this would make a really charming wall quilt so I decided to go for the smallest block size! This is a close up with a quarter so you can get a sense of the scale. I must admit that making these little blocks is rather addictive! I did not know that I would enjoy making the little pieces so much. It is really satisfying to use up some of my smaller scraps (because I have a hard time throwing away fabric scraps) AND the small size is a really nice little project to add in to the beginning or end of my day. The Fat Quarter Shop created a layout for the blocks with a center section and corners made from the blocks. There are large half square triangles that surround the center squares and I decided to flip my big HST to make more of a diamond setting for the blocks. I'll be using either a light gray OR I might try some low volume neutral prints in there. As you can see from my plan, I'll be making my blocks with white (cream Thatched) and two shades of gray. For three of the blocks (one of them- the flower- is my block!) I am highlighting them with color. Flowers, sewing machines and love...well, that deserves a little added notice! Since I will be using all Thatched basics from Moda, I know one thing I can do to add subtle variation is to flip the fabric and also use the backsides. The back side has a more chambray-like look and I can get some lighter shades that blend beautifully with the thatched colors on the front. I've picked Heather and Pebble for the colors and haven't decided yet on the colored squares, although sprig, chartreuse and tangerine might be the flower and turquoise or peacock for the sewing machine. I hope you will join along since sewing together creates such nice community, especially in times where we are more separated at home. A couple places to check in on a weekly basis on Fridays are the Fat Quarter Shop blog and LANDING PAGE (and this landing page has specs on how much fabric you should have and lots of information) and their youtube channel. There is also a facebook group called the Sewcialites Lounge and I just joined in. I will be posting my progress each week there and on instagram. Speaking of instagram, share your progress there using the hashtag #sewcialitesQAL and you will have a chance to win some prizes each month from sponsors like Moda Fabrics, Aurifil, Martingale Publishing, Creative Grids and more! See you on Fridays for a little sewing along!! Thanks Fat Quarter Shop for including me in this lovely project!
